Titleist SM9 Golf Wedges

Titleist SM9 Golf Wedges

Titleist SM9 Golf Wedges are the most versatile, accurate and forgiving wedges Bob Vokey has ever designed. They offer a wide variety of grinds and lofts to suit your personal style and game.

The SM9s feature a new spin milled process which tightens allowable tolerances to produce consistently sharp grooves. Micro-grooves are also individually cut in between main grooves, maximising spin on partial shots.

Spin Milled Grooves

One of the keys to a successful wedge is to offer maximum spin. For this reason, manufacturers have added grooves to the sole of their wedges that stretch across the entire face, allowing golfers to create more spin.

This is an effective way to make your wedges more versatile and controllable in the greens, especially in wet weather conditions. It also allows you to get the ball closer to the hole without making contact with the ground.

To maximize spin, the Vokey SM9 wedges feature an updated groove structure that includes tighter manufacturing tolerances and a heat-treatment process. This results in sharper grooves that last longer and more consistent.

The SM9 grooves are dynamic in depth, meaning that low lofts (46degdeg-54deg) have narrower grooves than higher lofts (56deg-62deg). These grooves help increase the durability of the SM9 wedges and improve their performance in both wet and dry conditions.

In addition to the grooves, the SM9 wedges also include micro-grooves cut in between each of the grooves. These partial micro-grooves help create more spin on partial shots, which is a great feature for golfers who need to get more distance on their wedges when taking half swings.

Another new feature in the SM9 wedges is the use of a new cutting process called Spin Milled. This process produces grooves that are sharper, closer to the USGA limits and more consistent than ever before.

This new groove technology is paired with an advanced edge radius design that helps the wedges remain sharp a bit longer and helps to slow down the inevitable wear of grooves, keeping them pristine and consistent over time. Finally, the grooves are treated with a heat treatment that doubles their durability and increases their longevity.

The new SM9 wedges have also been designed to suit players of all levels, from beginner to Tour professional. Each SM9 wedge is designed with six grind options and a variety of bounce options to provide optimum turf interaction and shot performance for the player’s swing and playing conditions.

Progressive Center of Gravity

The progressive center of gravity in a wedge set, like the one found on the Titleist SM9 Golf Wedges, allows for precise distance control and trajectory control. This alignment of the CG with each loft’s impact position maximizes ball flight, accuracy and forgiveness, while maintaining exceptional feel for consistent performance.

The CG is the point on a club head where the weight is perfectly balanced, so it determines launch, spin, spin rate, trajectory, shaft reaction and more. It can be shifted from right to left to favor either high launch and low spin, or low launch and higher spin.

To improve ball flight and spin, designers typically try to shift the CG of a driver or wedge. But moving mass over a larger distance doesn’t always yield significant change, as the natural trajectory of the ball moves it back and forth at the impact point.

This is why Vokey and Titleist took a different approach to the CG in the SM9 wedges. They started with a progressive CG throughout the set. They elongated the hosels to fine-tune the CG location, increasing forgiveness while improving ball flight and trajectory.

They then lowered the CG in pitching and gap wedges, moving more mass behind the ball at impact. This increases speed and distance gapping between irons and wedges, and reduces the chance of the ball spinning out of play.

But in the lob wedge, they went even further to push the CG forward, a new concept that is arguably more revolutionary. This is how they managed to achieve a lower dynamic loft, a more controlled flight and increased MOI — all while preserving the classic Vokey wedge head shape that players love.

This design also gives golfers the ability to choose from six tour-proven sole grinds that fit their swing type and course conditions. From a traditional full sole F Grind to Bob Vokey’s favorite M Grind, there’s a grind that suits every swing.

Bounce and Sole Grinds

The bounce angle of the leading edge to the sole of the wedge is the key to how your wedge performs on the course. For example, if the ground is soft and you tend to hit chunky shots, you'll want a wedge with a high bounce angle. But if you play on hard fairways and bunkers, a low bounce angle is more appropriate.

Titleist has taken the bounce angles of their SM9 wedges one step further, allowing players to choose between six tour-proven grinds: F, S, M, K, L and D. Each grind is designed for specific conditions and swing styles, so you can find the perfect wedge for you.

For instance, the F grind is a full-sole grind that is best for square face shots and a narrow crescent shape. It's the most popular option among tour players like Cameron Smith, Justin Thomas and Webb Simpson.

But the T grind is also a very versatile option, combining a narrow front section and a wider back flange to allow for shot-making under any condition. Compared to the L Grind, the T is more aggressive in heel, toe and trailing edge relief, and it's often used by players who prefer to open their face in order to manufacture shots around greens.

In addition, a new Spin Milled cutting process in the SM9 models tightens Titleist's allowable tolerances to produce consistently sharper grooves, which promotes higher and more consistent spin. These grooves also feature micro-grooves in between the larger grooves to maximize spin on partial swings.

Another feature of the SM9 wedges is Forward Center of Gravity Progression, which raises the CG vertically by adding weight to the topline design. A tapered pad at the back of the toe helps align the CG properly without being seen from the playing position. This promotes a lower launch and consistent distance.

A tour-proven grind from Master Craftsman Bob Vokey, SM9 wedges are offered in a wide range of lofts and bounce angles to suit players who rely on versatility around the greens. Each model is available in a variety of finishes, including Tour Chrome, Brushed Steel and Jet Black.

Customization

SM9 wedges are designed to fit every player, from beginner to Tour professional. With a wide range of loft, bounce and grind options, Vokey has a wedge for every player, no matter where they are in their game.

The new SM9 wedges have a progressive center of gravity that aligns the center of gravity with the impact position specific to each loft for precise distance and trajectory control. In addition, the hosels are longer to help increase forgiveness and promote a more forward CG for a more consistent ball flight.

These SM9 wedges also feature new Spin Milled grooves that are meticulously engineered through a new cutting process that tightens allowable tolerances to produce consistently sharper grooves. Micro-grooves are individually cut in between grooves, maximizing spin on partial shots, and a proprietary heat treatment is applied to the impact area to double the durability of the groove without impacting feel.

This new spinning groove design maximizes spin on all golfers, regardless of their swing speed or skill level. It also helps reduce the amount of debris that hits the face, which can cause ball spin.

Each wedge is 100% inspected to ensure the highest quality and performance before it is shipped, so golfers can rest assured they will receive the best performing SM9 wedges possible. They are also offered in lightweight steel and graphite shafts that will provide more in-store options for moderate swing speed players.

The SM9 wedges have a wide variety of loft, bounce and grind options that will give you the best shot possible on any course. You can use the Wedge Selector tool on Titleist’s website to find the right wedge for you and your swing.

Matching a wedge to a player is critical in achieving proper distance control and trajectory. The SM9 wedges deliver a flatter trajectory with a healthy dose of spin that provides the perfect blend of control for any player’s game.

SM9 wedges are available in six grinds, 23 different loft and bounce combinations, and three finishes. For even more customization, Vokey offers a number of custom options and a Wedge Works program that gives you the option to upgrade your shafts at no extra cost.
